Two different products with the same name

Twilight photos are the highest-performing exterior images in short-term rental listings, and there are two ways to get one. A real twilight is photographed on location during the twenty minutes after sunset. A virtual twilight is a daytime exterior converted afterward by an editor. Both are legitimate. They cost differently, they look different, and they suit different properties.

What a real twilight actually involves

The photographer stays on site until the sun goes down, waits for the sky to reach the deep blue stage, and shoots while the house lights, pool lights and landscape lighting are all on. That window is short and it does not repeat, so it has to be scheduled as part of the session rather than added at the end.

What you get is genuine: light spilling from real windows, real reflections in the pool, the actual colour the sky was that evening. If the property has landscape lighting, a lit pool or a fire feature, real twilight is the version that shows them working.

What a virtual twilight is

Our editors take a daytime exterior and rebuild it as an evening scene, adjusting the sky, the ambient light and the window glow by hand. It is finish work done by a person, not a filter, and it is priced lower than real twilight because it does not require the photographer to stay for the light.

It works best on properties with clean sky behind them and simple rooflines. It works less well where the real appeal is lighting the editor has to invent: an unlit pool cannot be made to glow convincingly, and a yard with no landscape lighting will not gain any.

Which to choose

The two are priced separately at booking and you choose one or the other, not both. Most hosts who have seen them side by side pick real twilight for the flagship property and virtual for the rest of a portfolio.

Be honest about which you used

A guest arriving to a house that looks nothing like the cover photo leaves a review that costs more than the booking. A virtual twilight that shows the house as it plausibly looks at dusk is fine. One that invents lighting the property does not have is not. We hold to that line on every edit.
